New Sounds & New Experiences: Contemporary Chamber Music from China - Call for Submissions of New Chamber Compositions

Call for Submissions of New Chamber Compositions

Music is the universal language of humankind. It embodies the common emotions and thoughts of human beings, carries a nation's history and culture, and represents a group's character and spirit. 

At the invitation of Mr. Ernst W?hler, First President of the National Council of the City of Vienna, the School of Music of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, also known as Shenzhen Conservatory of Music (Provisional), will give a concert themed "New Sounds & New Experiences: Contemporary Chamber Music from China" in the prestigious Vienna Konzerthaus in May 2024, in the Austrian capital, Vienna. Launching the first European tour of the School of Music since its establishment.

To demonstrate to audiences the achievements and development of Chinese new music in recent years, we are now announcing a call for submissions of contemporary chamber music compositions and inviting all Chinese composers to submit their works. A jury of top Chinese composers will review and select the participating works. The winning works will be performed by the School of Music faculty members of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen,Shenzhen Conservatory of Music (Provisional) at Vienna, Salzburg, and Linz; the winning works will also be presented at the 2024 Shenzhen International Chamber Music Festival in Shenzhen, Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, and other cities in the United States of America. 

 

Requirements for Entries

  • Works should be in chamber form, with specific presentations including, but not limited to, quartets, quintets, ensemble, and 1 solo instrument with chamber orchestra. 
  • Maximum instrumentation can not to exceed the following notation:

Vocals: 

1 mezzo-soprano

 

Woodwind:

2 flutes (may include piccolo)

2 oboes (may include English horn)

2 clarinets (may include bass clarinet)

2 Bassoon (may include contrabassoon)

 

Brass: 

2 Horns

 

Percussion:

2 Percussion (Excluding timpani)

 

Keyboard:

1 Piano

 

Traditional Chinese folk instruments:

1 Pipa

1 Guzheng

 

Strings:

3 violins

1 viola

1 cello

1 double bass

 

  • The duration of the work should be 7-14 minutes, and its exact duration must be clearly labeled on page 1 of the full score.
  • Works must be submitted as electronically typeset master scores, and the electronic version of the score provided must be in a directly printable A3 size, PDF format.
  • The instrumentation must be detailed on the title page of the general score.
  • The audio of the work should be in MP3 or AAC format, and it is recommended to upload a highly reproducible audio recording of the work, not limited to MIDI, live recordings, etc. The audio of the work should be in MP3 or AAC format. For works without audio, the score must be in Sibelius (Sibelius 6 or above).
  • The work must be the author's own original work, created (published) no earlier than December 31, 2016.
  • Each participant is limited to submitting one work.

 

Submission of Works and Judging

Deadline for the collection of works:

*for the visit to the United States and the Shenzhen International Chamber Music Season 2024

 

After the submission deadline, the School of Music of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Shenzhen Conservatory of Music (Provisional) will organize an expert jury to evaluate and select the best works for the competition.

The Chairman of the Jury will be Prof. Xiaogang YE, Dean of the School of Music of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Shenzhen Conservatory of Music (Provisional). To be fair, the members of the Jury will be announced at a later date.

 

Financial Terms

Participants will be responsible for all costs related to the preparation of materials and the production of the electronic version of the score for participation in this call. Once a work is selected, the composer is required to provide the score of the work. Costs incurred for printing the full score and the parts will be the responsibility of the School of Music of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen),Shenzhen Conservatory of Music (Provisional).

For the selected winning works, the expenses for orchestra rehearsals, performances, invitations to soloists and conductors, etc., will be covered by the School of Music of The Chinese University of Hong Kong(Shenzhen),Shenzhen Conservatory of Music (Provisional).The composers of the winning works may be invited to attend the rehearsals and performances according to the necessity.

Participants should be the composer of their works and independently enjoy the full copyright of their works. If a participant has signed a copyright agreement with any publishing company at the time of application, this should be clearly stated in his/her submission. If a work has been signed with a publishing company, the composer has to sign to agree that the composer will bear the score rental fee for the first official performance of the work.

The composers of the selected works shall agree to the right of the School of Music of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, also known as Shenzhen Conservatory of Music (Provisional), to make the first commercial use of the scores, sound recordings, video recordings, and audiovisual productions of the works in any form without any compensation, including rehearsals of the works prior to official performances, and the first performance of the works by the School of Music of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, also known as Shenzhen Conservatory of Music (Provisional), at the internationally or domestically.

Participants must ensure the originality of their submitted works. If the work is suspected of plagiarism or the theme is against public order and morals, the work will be disqualified from the competition.
