"BEHIND THE NOTES" Lecture & Concert Performance
Bruckner's symphonies hold significant milestone significance in the development of classical music, and they are revered in the hearts of many musicians and classical music enthusiasts.
To promote a deeper understanding of the stages of classical music development of the students, Professor Yong-yan HU, the renowned conductor, Academic Leader and Head of Conducting Division of the School of Music, CUHK-Shenzhen organizes the event "BEHIND THE NOTES" Lecture & Concert Performance. This event aims to guide the students to explore the symphonic space constructed by Bruckner through the lecture and concert, and is also part of the Celebration on the 2nd Anniversary of the School of Music of CUHK-Shenzhen.
On Oct. 25, Professor Yong-yan HU will use Bruckner's Fourth and Fifth Symphonies as windows to analyze the brilliance of his music created during the high development of the Romantic period, from the perspectives of composition, history, philosophy, aesthetics, and more. In addition to lectures, there will also be a concert featuring the splendid performances of the Philharmonia, CUHK-Shenzhen conducted by Professor Yong-yan HU, showcasing the artistic charm of Bruckner's works.

On October 25th, the content of lecture will cover several aspects, including theoretical concepts in composition analysis, history, and aesthetics: analyzing the influence of social development on orchestral styles by examining the evolution of the orchestra and auditorium in different periods in terms of quantity and scale; studying the essence and inherent regularities of music from a holistic perspective to discover the aesthetic of symmetry in music art; exploring the inheritance and innovation of Beethoven's musical legacy in the ocean of eruption in the mid-late Romantic period. Professor Yong-yan HU will start with Bruckner's Fourth and Fifth Symphonies, carefully observing the characteristics of his creative techniques and understanding how his symphonies gradually transitioned classical music from an era dominated by rationality to an era of unleashing emotions.
Individual scattered and fragmented pitches may lack musical ideas, but when these notes are organized in an orderly manner by the composer through combinations of different frequencies and values, behind the music stands a philosophical sculpture of a classical music master. Bruckner's music is laden with profound reflections on life and existence, and each of his motives' generation and development is worthy of our focused appreciation. This event will provide students with a rare opportunity to delve into Bruckner's musical world and expand their perspectives and knowledge of classical music. Whether you are a music major student or someone with a strong interest in classical music, we sincerely invite you to participate in this unique event of lecture and concert performance.
